There's a passionate Italian heart at the centre of the King Valley in the North East Victoria region of Australia.
The foundation of Paul Bettio Wines is family and the Bettio family have been making and enjoying wine for generations. The family settled in the King Valley with many other families of Italian origin, during the 1950's. Grape growing, wine making and sharing home grown and home made food and wine was (and is) an intrinsic part of rural Italian life. These pleasures were readily transferred to the King Valley. Paul and his wife Helen are taking the Bettio tradition to new heights at their picturesque King Valley vineyard and cellar door, located in the very centre of the King Valley.
Established in 1988, the vineyard boasts the spectacular Victorian Alps as a backdrop. Twenty-five hectares of vines alongside the King River include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Paul's father Joe has the winery's second vineyard at Cheshunt, with Chardonnay, Merlot and newer plantings of Barbera and Pinot Grigio to add to the range of estate grown fruit. Paul and Helen are passionate about making and sharing wines of distinctive King Valley character. The valley has ideal growing conditions for Italian grape varieties and its wineries are prominent producers of innovative and popular Mediterranean wine styles. However the region is known for more than just Italian varieties. An abundance of fresh mountain water, rich alluvial soils and ideal climatic conditions produces fruit of outstanding quality and rich flavour. Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc prosper in the Bettio's King Valley and Cheshunt vineyards. Delightful spring weather for budburst, very few frosts, cool evenings and warm dry heat in the summer, with a mild autumn harvesting season are a viticulturalist's (and viniculturalist's) dream. Fruit obtained from near ideal growing conditions, allows our winemaker to produce natural, fruit driven wines with broad appeal, as well as meticulously crafted wines with complexity and depth. Paul's philosophy is to make wines that people can enjoy at any time and with any meal. Paul's grandfather, Emilio, was known to have wine with breakfast! Paul and Helen may not have wine with their cornflakes, but believe the right wine will enhance any meal and their wines embrace this principle with an approachable, appealing style. Paul isn't one to push himself into the limelight and is only slowly becoming accustomed to having his name synonymous with the winery. Paul is far more comfortable with the visual branding of the winery, the very distinctive wine label design showing stylised, swirling King Valley bush in soft clean colours. Paul and Helen's children, call the label design the 'lollipops'. |
